Nama jeans pertama kali datang dari sejenis bahan yang dibuat di Eropa. Nama jeans diambil dari para pelaut Genoa di Italia. Pelaut ini selalu mengenakan pakaian yang terbuat dari bahan jean. Bahan tersebut terbuat dari katun, linen dan/atau wol. Kemungkinan besar kata ‘jean’ berasal dari bahasa Perancis, bleu de Genes atau celana biru dari Genoa, dan kita kenal hingga sekarang dengan Blue Jeans

Kalau ‘denim’ berasal dari nama bahan asli Perancis bernama Serge de Nimes. Serge artinya sejenis bahan. Nimes adalah nama sebuah kota di Perancis. Namun, di waktu yang bersamaan, dikenal pula sebuah bahan di Perancis bernama “nim”. Keduanya terdiri dari wol.

Popularitas denim di abad ke-18 juga meningkat.

Denim lebih kuat dan lebih mahal dari jeans. Keduanya mungkin serupa tapi perbedaannya hanya satu:

Denim terbuat dari satu jenis & warna benang, sedangkan Jeans adalah hasil tenun dua jenis benang berwarna sama. Namun ada juga yang bilang bahwa ‘denim’ adalah bahannya dan ‘jeans’ adalah produknya.

Pada abad 19, bahan keduanya terbuat dari katun. Warna biru yang biasa dipakai pada denim/jeans terbuat dari hasil olahan suatu tanaman yang bernama Indigo atau Indigovera. Indonesia bahkan disebut-sebut dahulu merupakan salah satu penghasil Indigovera terbesar dunia. Bahan tersebut yang asli harganya sangat mahal, karena itu ditemukanlah indigo sintetik oleh Adolf Von Baeyer pada tahun 1878.

Tips Membersihkan dan Merawat Bahan Suede

1. Gunakan suede protector
Semprotkan suede protector secara merata pada sepatu atau tas Anda untuk melindungi dari debu dan kotoran. Dimana membelinya? Suede protector banyak tersedia di toko-toko sepatu.

2. Karet penghapus
Jika debu terlanjur menempel, karet penghapus yang biasa kita gunakan untuk menghapus tulisan pensil ternyata bisa digunakan lho! Untuk menghilangkan debu tersebut, gosok secara merata, searah dan secara halus. Cara ini efektif untuk membersihkan noda ringan.

3. Penyedot debu
Penyedot debu adalah opsi untuk menghilangkan debu kering yang membuat warna kusam.

4. Sikat gigi dan air
Sikat gigi bekas dapat digunakan untuk noda yang terlanjur menempel, seperti lumpur atau cipratan minuman yang tumpah. Caranya, basahi sikat dan gosokkan searah pada noda. Untuk mengeringkannya, letakkan bahan suede pada kipas angin. Jangan sekali-kali menjemur sepatu Anda di bawah sinar matahari, supaya warnanya tidak mudah pudar.

5. Suede cleaner
Bila noda yang ada tidak bisa dihilangkan dengan keempat cara di atas, semprotkan suede cleaner dan sikatlah bagian yang disemprot.

6. Jaga bentuk sepatu dan kelembabannya
Setelah dibersihkan dan dirasa tidak akan dipakai dalam waktu yang lama, sebaiknya masukkan sepatu/tas ke kotak sepatu dan masukkan gumpalan koran ke dalamnya agar bentuk tetap terjaga. Alternatif lainnya, masukkan silica gel dan kapur barus pada kotak agar kelembaban dan baunya terjaga. Hal ini juga bisa mencegah masuknya serangga ke dalam sepatu.
